East Meets West

For this project, Backen & Backen Architecture and Grassi faced the challenge of combining the untamed beauty of the Napa landscape with a Japanese aesthetic. The two-story residence located on the Eastern Hills features board-formed concrete retaining walls with a stucco exterior. Its broad eaves, stained woods, natural light use, and minimal transitions between indoors and out are all elements of Japanese design. From the house, serene views of oaks, conifer, and manzanita trees mingle with sightings of deer, wild boar, coyote, mountain lion, and bobcat.
